Before all of the HIREconf fun begins in October, we wanted to shine a spotlight on some of the amazing speakers and sessions that will be gracing the stage on October 22nd. Let’s kick it off with the wonderful Coral Zelachowski.
Coral Zelachowski is the Recruitment Manager of the Strategic Sourcing team within Sodexo’s Talent Acquisition Group. A graduate of Penn State University, she has been in the recruitment industry for over 15 years. Spending the last 6 years with Sodexo, she leads a team of Strategic Sourcers who take pride in building pipelines of passive prospects and finding the right talent for hard to fill positions. Coral is passionate about the candidate experience, and being as efficient as possible in large volume sourcing/recruiting.
We asked Coral to share some of her thoughts on recruiting, technology, and how she keeps her focus on the candidate experience.
What was it about recruiting that made you decide to enter the field?
I was originally pursuing a career in sales and event planning when a recruiter recruited me to be a recruiter. (Tongue twister, I know.) They convinced me that sales was very similar to recruiting and that I should give it a try. I found the field so exciting and rewarding that I’ve been in it ever since. It has changed so much in the last 15 years, that no day is ever the same.
Tell us a little bit about your best day as a recruiter. What made it so great?
One of my best days as a recruiter has probably been when I got a candidate to accept an offer for a REALLY hard to fill role. The candidate was literally in tears because he had been out of work for a few months and said that I literally changed his life and that he was about to lose his home and by helping him secure a new job I had saved his family from having to move. The hiring manager was also SO excited about the hire….I wish every day was like that one.
What role does technology play in your day-to-day work life?
Technology has become one of the most important parts of my day-to-day work life. Between using recruitment technology to search for people, a CRM to keep them organized and engaged, email and or a cell phone to communicate, I honestly wouldn’t know how to do my job if you took away my computer and cell phone. Do I NEED all the fancy Chrome extensions and AI to do my job? No. But it sure does make things a lot easier and more efficient and I’m really lucky that Sodexo supports the use of new recruitment technology.
What do you think recruiters need to be willing to learn in order to be successful in the future?
To be successful in the future I really believe that recruiters need to be focused on engagement. Technology has made it easier than ever to FIND talent, the hard part now is engaging. The ability to create complex Boolean strings and such used to be what was needed to find talent, but technology has made all of that easier. Engaging talent is the real challenge of recruitment today and I believe will continue to be the challenge of tomorrow. Getting someone to answer your call or email, agree to a conversation with you and being able to sell someone on an opportunity, that is the hard part now. Recruiters who can’t do that in the future will have a tough time being successful in my opinion.
How do you make sure candidate experience is the best it can be when dealing with large volume sourcing and recruiting?
I think following the golden rule is the best way to ensure the candidate experience stays positive. Using automation and technology to keep talent “warm” helps keep us top of mind. For example, we personally send a list of our current openings every week to our pipeline talent and encourage them to let us know as soon as they see a position of interest. At which point we then answer any questions they have and hand them over to the recruiter to take them through the rest of the process. We use our CRM to automate these messages, but they come from our own email addresses so when a prospect hits reply the message shows up in my inbox, not just a general careers inbox. It keeps things personal, which in turn creates a positive candidate experience.
